Spaces that have plenty of natural light and ventilation, spaces that have a good view, spaces that have a fresh feel and spaces that inspire, induce positive feelings, spaces that are cheerful and lively.

A degree or diploma in architecture can lead a person to become an architect and designer of all kinds of constructions i.e. residential or commercial buildings, bridges or flyovers etc.

There is ample demand for architects in urban as well as semi-urban areas. A fresher usually undergoes apprenticeship with an architectural firm for a few years as experience.

Junior architects work as consulting managers. They inspect and deal with major technical issues. Architectural firms, construction companies and government departments are always on the look out for companies and government departments are always on the look out for architects.

Teaching institutions also prefer faculty members who are practicing architects.

Architect also provide an amazing range of services. These services include architectural and pre & post project services, consultancy as well as dispute resolution and other professional services.

A related profession is that of interior designing. This is a less rigorous task, since it involves doing the interiors as per the needs of client.

Many people have got into interior designing without any formal degree. Usually, architects take up the job of interior design as well, though there are people who exclusively do interior designing. Interior design courses are offered by private institutes and polytechnics.

Architects do the work of interiors but it leaves much scope for freelance interior decorators. This is so because small jobs such as doing an office or a house would not be given to an architect. An aesthetic sense, color combinations, a knowledge of art materials available from different states are the requirements of an interior designer.

To study architecture, you have to appear in the entrance examinations of various institutes. Many of these are conducted jointly with the Pre-engineering Test.

In entrance test, one is tested for creative skills and mathematics. The basic qualification is 10+2 or equivalent. After 10+2, you can pursue graduation (B. Arch) of five year duration. Post graduate courses are after the completion of B. Arch and are of a duration 1-1/2 years (3 semesters). AIEEE is supposedly designed on the pattern of IIT-JEE, though the level of questions is much simpler, based on the common minimum syllabus derived from all State boards.

Besides objective type, 1-1/2 hour question papers in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, AIEEE will also have a full-length aptitude test for students appearing for the architecture stream. At times, students may also be asked to sketch 2 and 3-D drawing to a given scale. Prepare for hard work during the degree, as you will be taught not only the elements of design but things to keep in mind while designing different buildings like hospitals, schools and homes. Thus, one must be aware of building techniques and materials.

Most of Institutes are conducting a separate entrance examination and following an ad-hoc pattern of selection. But from last year, in order to improve professional standards and bring all state level engineering, pharmacy, architecture and planning colleges under one national umbrella, all-India level exam has been started.

One can do a course in interior design from a institute. Quality of course varies from city to city. So, one must be careful while joining the course.

Finally, it may be said that a career in architecture and interior design can turn out to be a very satisfying one. An aspirant also can go abroad as architect.

These professionals are paid very well in America and Europe continentals. One must be aware of the latest trends and be able to suggest a design that the client has not thought of. This is the only way to get success in this field.
