Various aspects of translation discussed in talk on translation

Aligarh: The German Section of the Department of Foreign Languages at Aligarh Muslim University organized a resource talk on the theme, "Translating the Unsaid: Translation of Hindi/Urdu literature into German".

Delivering the talk, Dr. Almuth Degener, a Retired Professor, at the Indology Department, at the University of Mainz from Germany, elaborated on the intricacies that she came across while translating the Urdu and Hindi texts into German. She discussed various aspects of translation in the light of her translation of the Hindi poem anthology, "November ki dhoop", written by Namita Khare and Sanjeev Kaushal.

"We do the task of translation with full admission that the soul shall be lost in the process of transferring the content from the source language to the target language, and to have footnotes to fill this gap would rather spoil the aesthetic beauty of an artistic work," she remarked.

In his opening remarks, Prof Muhammad Azhar, Chairman of the department and Dean, the Faculty of International Studies, shared his insights on the art of translation and highlighted the achievements of the department.

Prof. Rakshanda Fazli welcomed the guest speaker, while Syed Salman Abbas introduced her to the audience. He said Dr Degener is a well-known scholar with a diverse research interest encompassing areas such as Nuristani and Dardic languages, Central Asian Buddhism, and Urdu and Hindi literature.

Dr Subair PM proposed a vote of thanks.
